NeuroStar Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is a non-invasive brain stimulation procedure that uses magnetic pulses to treat mental health conditions. Like the electromagnetic fields of an MRI machine, TMS applies quick, repeated magnetic pulses.
In NeuroStar TMS Therapy, these magnetic pulses are applied to specific areas of the brain responsible for mood.
HOW DOES TMS WORK?
TMS works by altering the brain’s electromagnetic field through a coil, producing magnetic pulses. The pulses can cause an increase or decrease in the brain’s electrical current. This depolarization of cerebral neurons is used to target specific areas of the brain.
The intensity of your stimulation will be determined upon your initial consultation with your TMS professional.
Connecting this magnetic coil to the prefrontal cortex in the brain over time can cause these neurons in the brain to release neurotransmitters (brain chemicals).
These Neurotransmitters include:
- Serotonin — a hormone found in the brain that stabilizes mood
- Dopamine — a neurotransmitter in charge of transmission feelings of pleasure between nerve cells
- Noradrenaline — works with adrenaline to produce energy to the body
Typically in patients struggling with Major Depressive Disorder, abnormal activity in their dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) can be found using an EEG. To bring these functions back to normal, we target this area of the brain with TMS.
The NeuroStar TMS Therapy procedure works over the course of roughly six weeks, five days a week, with anywhere from 19-37 minutes per session.
